Horizon May Updates!

Hello Band Families!

We’re on that final push to the end of the year! There is a lot of fantastic music awaiting your ears the next few weeks and the bands are excited to share what they’ve been up to at the award concerts. This is also a great time to celebrate our seniors and give them the send off they deserve! Just around the corner we have our trip to Cañon City and graduation as well! Here are some celebrations, information about next year’s trip (Still time to join but the window is closing in about a month!), and important happenings all things Horizon Band:

Winter Guard:

I want to extend a HUGE congratulations to the Horizon Winter Guard and their amazing coaches DJ Stevens and Alan Mendieta for their second place finish in AA class! What a way to end the first Winter Guard season Horizon has ever had. Their success would not have been possible without the families who helped transport the students around, volunteer food and support all season to the guard, so thank you parents! Their final performance at DU was beautiful and I’m so looking forward to the program's continued success!

CBA State Concert Band Festival- Wind Ensemble:

It was an honor for the band to qualify and perform at the CBA State Concert Band Festival a few weeks back, and I am so incredibly proud of their performance! They received an Excellent Rating and learned two difficult pieces of music in just three and a half weeks of rehearsal. We received great feedback, a clinic from the Washington State Director of Bands, and had a really fun day playing in the beautiful Griffin Hall at CSU. We can’t wait to show off this music at the concert on Tuesday May 3rd at 6:30 pm in the HHS auditorium!

Skyline Jazz Festival:

What a fun new experience the Skyline Jazz Festival was for the Horizon Jazz Bands! This was our first experience having not one but TWO clinicians come and help us after our performances. Jazz combo and Jazz II received Excellent Ratings and Jazz I received a Superior! The jazz bands have all been hard at work since the Mile High Jazz Festival and are so excited to perform for everyone on May 10th at 6:30 pm in the HHS auditorium!

Awards Concerts:

Like I said above, our concerts are coming up and you’re all invited! We have moved the concerts to 6:30 pm because there is AP testing all week in the auditorium, and we have the Cañon City Trip and want to avoid going too late. We have so much music ready for you all and this will be our chance to celebrate lettering in band, ensemble awards, and the national band awards!

Concert Bands- Tuesday, May 3rd, 6:30 pm

Jazz Bands- Tuesday, May 10th, 6:30 pm

Cañon City:

Here is a link to our itinerary if you missed it:

Canon City Trip Itinerary

Here is the parade route in case you were planning on watching the parade:

The “main street” is Royal Gorge Blvd and the Parade kicks off at 1 pm.

Horizon is the 8th band in the parade with a prestage at 1:15 pm and will probably be passing the judges stand around 2 pm. After the parade we head to the Royal Gorge and then back home.

Color Guard and Drumline Auditions:

Since these two sections work a little differently and we need to assign instruments and equipment to students it takes additional time and auditions.

Percussion- Tuesdays from 5:30-7 pm in the Band Room

Color Guard- Fridays from 4-8 pm in Large Gym

Graduation Tuesday, May 17th:

The graduation ceremony will be on May 17th at 7:00 pm at the University of Colorado Boulder. The concert bands all play as a combined group for the ceremony and this is our biggest performance and audience of the year! It’s important to have all of our students at this performance, it is for a grade, and adds so much to the ceremony. This will also be the Senior’s last performance with the band for the “Senior Song.” Here is the schedule:

3:00 pm- Call time at Horizon HS

3:15 pm- Mass Band Rehearsal

4:30 pm- Load trailer and buses

5:15 pm- Arrive at CU Event Center, unload and set up band

6:40 pm- Band starts playing pre ceremony music

7:00 pm- Graduation Ceremony begins

Students must ride the bus to graduation, but if you’d like to take your students from the ceremony, please email me and let me know ahead of time. After the ceremony, please check out with me and your students and I’ll get them marked down on the roster as picked up.

Marching Hawks Read Through May 19th @5:00 pm

We are thrilled to get the whole band working on the upcoming show “Through the End” in a few weeks! We are so excited about this music and to tell a great story to our audiences. We will be meeting in the band room and hold a meeting in the auditorium later that evening at 6:30 pm for all marching band families. We will be going over the season's dates, any changes from last year, fundraising opportunities in the summer, and getting volunteer work organized.

The Marching Hawk’s Leadership Corps has just been announced for the season and holy cow did we have some difficult decisions to make. The staff committee felt like all of the students came in prepared, with professionalism, and represented our Horizon Band Community with pride and excellence! I am so proud of the passion and dedication of our students and I really wish I could have picked everyone for a position! We had over 40 students audition for 22 spots so competition was fierce! I also loved seeing a larger representation in our current freshman and sophomore class stepping up to have more ownership of our band community.
