Horizon Band Happenings! - Spring 2022

Hello Band Families!

We have so much going on this upcoming month, I wanted to send out an update, so please bear with me and read through the entire email so everyone can be in the loop!


Registration:

It's already that time for registration! We are so excited to still be offering a robust number of ensembles and classes in the music department and I wanted to throw out a few reminders:


Jazz band:

-Student's in Jazz Band should also be paired with a concert ensemble.

-Jazz 1 and 2 are audition only and are in the traditional big band set up

-Jazz 3 can be any instrument and is Non-Audition

Marching/Concert Bands:

-If taking Marching Band sign up for--> Marching Band+Symphonic Band or Marching Band+Wind Ensemble

-If not taking marching band and are a freshman or sophomore--> Concert Band

-If not taking marching band and are a junior or senior--> Symphonic Band


Auditions for Wind Ensemble will be later in the semester.


Music Theory/Technology:

-This is a new addition to see what interest we have in this kind of semester class. This is only for students enrolled in another music course and is supplemental to their overall music education.


Jazz Concert: (Feb 8th @7p)

We are so excited for our next jazz concert on February 8th at 7:00 pm in the HHS Auditorium! We are going to be joined by both Century and Rocky Top Jazz Bands, so please come support our Horizon area jazz efforts and expect some really fun music!


Mile High Jazz Festival: (Feb 10th @10a)

Permission slips have gone home for the jazz festival down at Metropolitan State University for next Thursday. Our performance times and schedule are:

10:00 am- Depart HHS for Lunch

12:00 pm- Watch MSU Jazz Concert

1:55 pm- Horizon HS Jazz 3 - Combo

2:45 pm- Horizon HS Jazz Ensemble 2

3:35 pm- Horizon HS Jazz Ensemble 1

5:00 pm- Depart MSU to HHS

5:30 pm- Arrive at HHS


Parents are welcome to come to the King Center to watch our performances, no charge! (855 Lawrence Way #145, Denver, CO 80204)


Canon City Update:

The Horizon High School Music Department will be traveling to Canon City, Colorado to participate in the Canon City Music and Blossom Festival! This will be an overnight trip, and the total cost of the trip is $150 per student. A trip deposit of $50 was tentatively due Feb. 1st. It is highly encouraged and expected that every student travels so we can perform to the best of our ability, and so everyone can contribute to a great performance and experience the festival. If you need extra time for the deposit or need assistance with payment, please contact your director for help. The Trip dates are May 6th and return on May 7th. You can pay the full amount in one payment or you can make monthly payments. Here is the payment schedule: February 1st - $50 March 1st - $50 April 1st - $50 (FULL PAYMENT DUE) You may pay for the trip via the PAY FOR IT tab through Infinite Campus on your student's account. Your student will be charged the total amount for those planning on travelling. This pays for: -Transportation to/from Canon City -Hotel Room -Travel breakfast -dinner Friday -Admission to Royal Gorge Bridge and Park If you are interested in chaperoning, please email your student's director. A payment of $150 will be needed as well to pay for the above. As always, if you have any questions please contact your student's director. Band Parent Quarterly Meeting: The first 10 mins or so of the Big Trip Meeting will be the quarterly band/parent meeting to update band families on the finances and activity of the HHSBPA.

Big Trip Meeting:

Speaking of fun trips, we have been approved through the district for a trip to Boston and New York next Spring!!! This trip will include marching in the Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade (One of the largest St Patty celebrations in the world!!), workshops, multiple shows in NYC, along with a few other experiences unique to the cities we will be in.


We are going to have our first trip meeting on February 15th, at 7 pm in the HHS Auditorium to go over cost, details, what's included, and steps moving forward. Here is a link to the information flyer for the trip meeting:

This is a meeting open to our incoming 8th grade class as well. I've also sent this to the middle school directors, but if you have an 8th grader as well or know of other families, please let them know of this great opportunity!

***Please keep an eye out for our next BPA email regarding an individual fundraiser. This will give students going on the big band trip an opportunity to get a head start on raising money for next year. It's a quick and easy fundraiser for all families. The items being sold are only $2 each. Watch for the email!
