Band Camp Aug 2nd-6th - Updates!

Hello Band Families!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Summer Break and is recharged and ready to get back into the Marching Band Season! The staff has been hard at work on getting this show complete for camp to start and we are so excited to get started!

There is a lot of information about band camp that is going to be important to know so we can be as safe and successful as possible getting through the week and have a great parent Show and Tell on Friday!

I am so excited that there can be our usual amount of parent involvement back in our program to help with Uniforms, Fruit Breaks, Prop Building, and we will also make sure to get you even more involved this year at the show and tell performance! Here is all the info you need to know moving into band camp on Monday:

Calendar:

The updated calendar can be found at:

This includes all Marching Hawks rehearsals, performances, football games, and meetings.

Daily Schedule:

  • We will meet every day from 8/2-8/6 from 8 am-5 pm with lunch always at 12:00 pm.

  • Our expectation is students are early to rehearsal to help set up, get mentally prepared for the day's events, and start on time with focus.

Face coverings (Masks)

Here is the latest communication from the district regarding Masks so everyone is on the same page:

The following expectations will begin Monday, Aug. 2:

  • Staff: All staff are required to wear masks when in schools and district buildings regardless of vaccination status. We believe the staff mask expectations outlined above give us the best opportunity to provide consistency in operations and learning as we begin the school year. Our best hope is that it will minimize the number of staff, whether vaccinated or not, who will be required to isolate for a minimum of 10 days due to contracting COVID.

  • Students: Masks are optional, not required, for all students. Based on the latest guidance from Tri-County Health Department and Broomfield Public Health, masks are recommended for all students, regardless of vaccination status, but are not required. The district strongly encourages masks for all in our buildings. We will honor the decision of parents when it comes to their children wearing or not wearing a mask in school.

  • Adult visitors and volunteers: All adults in schools and district buildings are required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.

  • Buses: Masks are required for everyone on district buses per federal law.

  • Outdoors: Masks are not required for anyone when outdoors.

Band Camp Student Needs:

  • Instrument!

  • Water (Large Bottles 32+ oz recommended)

  • Music/ Pep Folder/ Lyre/ Pencil

  • Appropriate Closed Toed Shoes

Canopies/ Shade structures needed!!

  • If you have a canopy you aren’t using for the week, please consider letting the band use it for the week of band camp! It’s going to be HOT this upcoming week and we want to provide the students with more shade on our parking lot to stay safe and have appropriate rests during water breaks and during lunch if any students are staying at the school.

Band Camp Spirit Days:

We are so excited for band camp and love to tag spirit days into the fun! Here is a rundown of the week:

Show and Tell -Friday, August 6th at 6pm.

Show and tell is almost here! This is one of the most fun events of band camp where we get to show off all of the student’s hard work to YOU! We will have a short information meeting, the students will perform, and we will have some food and drinks for you while you socialize and mingle. We will have sign up sheets for different committees such as fundraising, chaperoning, Music and Arts, pit crew, and food. You will have the opportunity to purchase your HHS Band bumper stickers and reusable bags at this time as well. The funds earned from these sales are 100% profit and go to help the general fund. We will also have a silent auction going on during the Show and Tell. Bring your cash or checkbook and bid on your favorite basket. We will have baskets that include everything from meeting your coffee fix to family fun, and your pets. Help support the band program; 100% of the profit goes toward the general fund.

New Assistant Director of Bands:

If you haven’t heard from the grapevine yet, Mr. Tafoya has accepted a position as Orchestra Director and Assistant Director of Bands at Legacy High School. We are excited for this opportunity for him and wish him the absolute best down the street! But with him leaving we needed to find another director and were fortunate enough to find Mr. Duran right before band camp started! Here is his information:

Mr. Alex Duran is the former Director of Bands and Choirs at Trinidad Middle & High School, where he taught for two years. Prior to that, he taught for two years in Leadville, CO at Lake County High School where he was also the Director of Bands. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley with a Bachelor of Music

Education Instrumental emphasis and his main instrument is clarinet. During his time at UNC, Alex participated in the Pride of the Rockies Marching Band for four years where he served as band photographer, squad leader, videographer, and Drum Major. He is also a member of Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity where he served as chapter Historian and chapter President.

Alex has worked with different bands across the Front Range. During the summers, Alex also co-teaches the Command the Field Drum Major and Leadership Camp where he teaches band leadership and conducting to students from across the state.

Alex is an alumnus of Horizon High School, graduating in 2013, where he was very active in the music and performing arts department. He will currently live in Firestone, CO with his dog Nakita and cat Izzy, whom he loves dearly, and cannot wait to be a part of Hawk Nation again!

Fun Services Fundraising Opportunities:

Please click on the following link and sign up to help raise money for the band's general fund. There are two dates to help out. Volunteering at these events is a fun and easy way to help us build the general fund, especially after a year of very little activity. This band season will be costly. Half of all of the expenses for the year are covered by fundraising money...we need your help! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0545AFAA22A5F58-funservices4

Uniform Fittings: Band Camp will be here soon... August 2nd-6th.

We need your help to fit all of the students with their uniforms. Please click on this link to sign up at a time that works for you. There is no sewing required. It's a great way to get to know the band students and build a rapport.

Prop Construction:

We will need a lot of help building the props that are necessary for this year's marching show. We have wheels to replace on percussion equipment, walls to build, and past props to convert! A lot of fun work to be done if you enjoy working with your hands. We even need to build a temple entrance for our show’s story! Please take a look at the following link and sign up for a time to assist in making the marching show one of the best shows ever.

The show is complete, the drill is all finished, we just need to learn it! Thank you so much for the help to make this upcoming Band Camp a great experience for our students! Please let me know if you have any questions!
